Anybody Hiked The Appalachain Trail Or Plan To?
Has anybody hiked the Appalachian Trail (or part of it)? Have some pics? Where else have you hiked and what were your highlights?
Just curious... random I know.

Re: Anybody Hiked The Appalachain Trail Or Plan To?
I have done part of the Bruce Trail in Ontario which runs through the province of Ontario in full for 900 km, doing the trail from one end to the other I think takes 3 months and I am not fit enough for that; I would like to do the Coast to Coast walk delineated by Wainwright in the UK but I would need to get fitter than I am right now. I hope to do it before I die; perhaps you could come over and we can assemble a party to do it -you have to stand in the sea in St Bees at one end, and in the sea at Robin Hood Bay at the other hand to claim you did the walk, not sure about Appalachian, but it sounds good, as long as it doesn't end up like John Boorman's film Deliverance....

Krissy, if you go through the Smokeys, sleep in the bear cages!

shot a film a few years back in the stecoah-cheoah gap along the appalachian trail corridor in north carolina. it was very cold but very scenic with a great view of the nantahala gorge from the top
also hiked in the snohomish county area (long time ago). this was my favorite place only because [reason withheld due to it being unknown to anyone outside this area]
i also hiked at this place called hell's gate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell's_Gate_National_Park
despite the very fitting name, the place is very unforgiving country due to the increasing wild-life migration currently being threatened by increasing rises in human population

Re: Anybody Hiked The Appalachain Trail Or Plan To?
My family used to do the Pacific Crest Trail in the Marble Mountains Wilderness when I was growing up. I was thinking about taking a couple of weeks off and going back just for kicks and giggles to see how much it has changed and get away for a while.
I was just feeling restless and checking out hiking across the USA. I love the PNW but sometimes I wish I lived elsewhere so I didn't have to worry about crappy weather and could just go and disappear for a weekend.

I used to do the Shenandoah part, those are some long miles, I'm not sure it's worth a 3,000 mile ride to get to, though. It's nice. Well kept, good camping spots, shady, lots of up and down. Here's a pic from Old Rag mountain, pretty typical of the vistas, in high school we've drive up and smoke herb up there. One time a cloud rolled in and we had to put a guy on the hood to make sure we didn't drive off a cliff. Good times....

That is a really great picture... really puts into perspective just how tiny we are.
Looks like good bouldering!

I've section hiked a few places. Mostly in Virginia in the Shenandoah. Unfortunately, I don't have any photos, but the views were spectacular! Nice hiking, but bears in the valley are pretty common, so if you camp... bear bags are a must! lol

Lmao ...no, and they fight too much anyway! ...but in all seriousness, some figures put the black bear (leave it alone, Krissy!) at approximately 1 per acre within the park boundaries. They're generally pretty shy, though, preferring to stay away unless food is easy to get. I've had a few late night/early morning visitors though... it does make you WIDE AWAKE.
