Start by figuring out a business model and decide which direction you want to take your career. If you're looking to actually make a living out of it, be prepared to work hard and make sure you have the capital to see the thing through properly... otherwise don't start at all.

Any honest, independent site owner will tell you it is much, MUCH harder than it looks to make, maintain, and operate a site than most people think... To make money doing it is even more difficult. Really take some time and think things through before you start getting into it.

You need a pretty face, a creative brand, an outgoing fan-oriented personality, and either time to handle the business aspect yourself or money to pay someone to do it for you. I'm a do-it-yourselfer personally, straddling the line between glorified amateur and actual professional. I have to split my time between this business, my DJ business, classes, and my son when he's here, as well as other social obligations. I love my boyfriend, but the poor thing either watches me work all day, almost every day, or has to deal with my physical condition when I exhaust myself, and I do... regularly. Sometimes he gets to participate, which I know he appreciates, but he does pay a price.

I spent the last 4 years working on my website, not only because I changed software and needed to cobble together a network of people to help a bit along the way, but because I was one-foot-in and one-foot-out until I recently decided to buckle down and do it. Like Krissy said - have a business plan - either decide that you want to be successful in this business and go all out, or see it as a hobby from which you might make a few dollars, but from which you also might not.

Seanchai's advice early in the article is very good and a clear picture of the realities as is Krissy's.

Becoming profitable is a long term proposition. Don't skimp on updates. I'm a firm believer in a video & matching stills EVERY week. Don't kid yourself -- that's a grueling pace. If you can handle shooting 3 matched photos & videos per day, that's 5 days of shooting every 3 months. Editing the stills and videos for the quarter will about another 40 hours of work. Figure at least anther 90-100 hours per quarter of marketing time.

A few things folks haven't mentioned is the importance of multiple revenue streams. Different folks like to buy their content on different platforms. By releasing content selectively across a number of them, you can increase your profitability without cannibalizing your main website.

If anything Wendy's advice on the amount of time and work falls on the conservative side and can run a lot more for a successful site. Always shoot 4-6 months of updates in advance - just in case something happens and you cant shoot for a while your site wont stagnate. Make sure your fanbase is a BUYING fan base - you can have a ton of casual fans but if they either cant or wont laydown the money to join your site its not doing a hell of a lot of good business wise.

I would add - Dont plan on Porn being your sole source of income - its actually quite rare that happens and even for those that only work in the adult industry if things get "thin" for your fan base you can find yourself in a lot of trouble really quick. Hold down a real job - go to school - get an education - wouldnt hurt to take a few classes about marketing and running websites.

Getting naked on camera is easy - making a career out of it is a hell of a lot harder.

I'll tell you what...if I were to start one of these websites, which I've no intention of doing, I would set aside some budget for consulting fees because people already in the biz are definitely the best source of info.
