Re: Canada's Supreme Court strikes down anti-prostitution laws
Lol, it will probably work well up there. The only problem is, we won't do shit down here. Our government is too chicken shit down here. There are two groups that lead the GOP by the nose in this country. The uber rich and the religious right. The uber rich won't give a fuck about prostitution. Well I take that back. They will give a fuck and want it to be legalized, but they are too chicken shit to say so. They have better things to fight over than prostitution. Like how to pay their representatives to make laws to give them more tax shelters so they can make more money. The religious right on the other hand will have a shit fit if there is any talk about legalizing prostitution. Since anyone in the GOP could not possibly be elected into office without the support of the religious right. That in turn will make any GOP member of either house vote no. End of story.

Re: Canada's Supreme Court strikes down anti-prostitution laws
Harper is not, repeat NOT an uber Conservative. He governs from the centre to centre right of the political spectrum. Harper has never and will never let his personal beliefs interfer with his running the country. He is PERSONALLY against abortion. Everytime one of his Members of Parliament moves to introduce a motion that even hints at abortion, Harper crushes it. He has never and will never try to re-open the gay marriage debate. Is he pleased with the ruling? I would say he no doubt would have preferred a different outcome, but not because of personal beliefs. More because he will be hearing bitching from the more socially Conservative portion of his base supporters.

Understanding Harper's Evangelical Mission:
http://thetyee.ca/Opinion/2012/03/26...lical-Mission/
Would you say Harper is to the right of Obama? Is he the most right-leaning Prime Minister Canada has ever had?
Smart tacticians understand the general mood of the country. Plus a politician could be committing political suicide if he seeks to ban abortion. Noting the female population and how they'd react.
Politics is about power. And power is very addictive. So Harper, like all politicians, wants to hold onto that power.
I'd agree. He appears to be of the moderate sect of that Party. I mean, a lot of extreme conservatives wanna bring us back to, well, 1813. Actually, a lot of extremists do not live in the real world.
Harper, like Obama, appears to live somewhere in the real world.
He, like Obama, admits climate change/chaos is real. But, like Obama, doesn't really care.
Politicians are wrapped up in a system, in a structure, that only cares about short-term power and profits. What happens in 20 or 30 years, well, who cares.

Re: Canada's Supreme Court strikes down anti-prostitution laws
We would wait for you with open arms, Bella!
Cockgobbler is right: I think he's not quite as much to the right as a prime Minister as Obama is as a president (which says nothing of his private, personal preferences indeed), but he's closing in on it. My hunch is, it's a simple matter of power. He has a strong base in the West, but the rest of the country won't follow. Right now, polls indicate that the 3 parties are quite close, which would mean a minority government for any of them. He will remain very careful.

Re: Canada's Supreme Court strikes down anti-prostitution laws
Regardless of a leader's personal opinions and beliefs, they are also working towards the goal of keeping themselves in power. Re-opening the gay marriage and abortion platforms would kill them in the next election. So the question is, will legalization or decriminalization of prostitution be good or bad for their chance at maintaining power?

Re: Canada's Supreme Court strikes down anti-prostitution laws
Agreed. One would be committing political suicide if one were to try to criminalize abortion. Noting that women can vote. I mean, if this were, say, 1900, well, whole different ball game. Women didn't have the power to vote.
Even on gay marriage. Attitudes are changing. People are become more socially liberal, socially tolerant, as it were.
And, yep, all politicians crave more and more power. That's one of the enticing things about war. It maximizes their power.
And, again, power is very addictive... and as everyone knows: very corrupting.

Re: Canada's Supreme Court strikes down anti-prostitution laws
They finally got it... porstitution, it's allways there no matter what.
When it's legal and regulated, it can bring some taxes to coverment and there can be health regulations as well.. like in Germany.
When it's illegal there comes nothing good but it's still there...
