Bordering on War? Immigration and Secession
Two articles on the 'crisis' on the Southern border of the US provoke some difficult thoughts: one can set aside the 'Divorce' magnet from Georgia, but in the case of Texas, it appears that Governor Abbott is determined to confront the Federal Govt by 'going rogue' with his own policy.
On one level, there is the short term tactic of forcing the Federal Govt to be more effective in its policy on illegal immigration; but it relies on the operation of a system which people like Abbott believe has failed, so at one and the same time he is part of the problem which he knows does not have a solution, but with his ally Trump, sees this is a positive for the Republican Party if it makes a Democrat President look weak, while tarnishing the reputation of other Democrats, such as the Mayor of New York for failing to deal with a crisis which in large part is of Abbott's making.
On a deeper level, Texas is in effect not suggesting seceding from the US, but repudiating the authority of the Supreme Court, Congress and the President, and daring Biden to do something to interfere in the 'domestic' politics of Texas. Thus
"Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) released a statement Wednesday that used language eerily reminiscent of Southern states’ statements of secession ahead of the Civil War: He threatened to defy the Supreme Court decision, declaring that the “federal government has broken the compact between the United States and the States.” The next day, Republican governors from 25 states issued a joint statement supporting Abbott, praising him for “stepping up to protect American citizens from historic levels of illegal immigrants, deadly drugs like fentanyl, and terrorists entering our country.” (see link to Carlson's quote below).
Is the US sliding into Civil War?
The money is there to solve this problem, but American's Billionaires will not share it, and have decided that Virtue is a sin against Wealth, just as the Democrats are too weak to redistribute the wealth, just as the political will to deal with the deep issues in Central America and Mexico seems to be lacking. But if it means Immigration and the Border become the hot topics in the General Election, don't expect coherence on either side, just nastiness.
Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson thinks the situation is now so grave he proclaims:
"“It’s unanimous: Everyone in power, from the White House, to the hedge fund managers, to the Supreme Court of the United States, has decided to destroy the country by allowing it to be invaded,” Carlson told his 11 million followers on X (formerly Twitter). “That leaves the population to defend itself. Where are the men of Texas? Why aren’t they protecting their state and the nation?” "

But where is Carlson? On the border, locked and loaded, or safe in his palatial home, far from the war zone, content to scream into a megaphone rather than 'put his ass on the line' -and is this not where the war becomes either an actual, shooting war, or just middle aged white men shouting at each other?

Re: Bordering on War? Immigration and Secession
"Speaking on GB News America, [Dan] Miller claimed the majority of Texan voters are backing the independence cause and momentum is continuing to ramp up.He compared it to Brexit, telling Patrick Christys that Texans, like Britons, have a “very clear picture of what it looks like when people want to reclaim their right of self government”.
Texas secessionist claims ‘Texit’ is getting closer as US border woes boil over: ‘We’re ready!' (msn.com)
Does any State in the Union have a 'right of self government' that enables them to secede? And if Texas was independent, how would it control the border with Mexico?
