I have a friend from Asia who was completely mystified by the men in frocks he saw on prime time tv (no pun intended) when he was here in the UK. I had to explain to him that most of it came from the entertainment that soldiers and POW's arranged for themselves during the wars, as well as the long tradition of drag which dates back at least to Elizabethan times if not before. He understood my explanation, but still found it hard to watch Stanley, and the two Ronnies:
